  • ( ) IMF Executive Board Approves US$111.3 Million PRGF Arrangement for Nicaragua

The Executive Board of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) today approved a three-year, SDR 71.5 million (about US$111.3 million) arrangement under the Poverty Reduction and Growth Facility (PRGF) for Nicaragua in support of the government's economic program. The decision allows an immediate disbursement to Nicaragua of an amount equivalent to SDR 11.9 million (about US$18.5 million).

This is intended to ensure that PRGF-supported programs are consistent with a comprehensive framework for macroeconomic, structural, and social policies to foster growth and reduce poverty. More>>

  • ( ) Commander preps private equity sale

FOUNDERING telecommunications and technology group Commander may be bought by a private equity group this week.

Commander's shares have been suspended for the past 10 days amid serial problems with its bankers and auditors. The $33 billion-a-year Australian telecommunications sector is in the midst of a measured consolidation, which has produced a number of deals this year. As well, there is a list of trade buyers headed by Optus, Telecom New Zealand Australian subsidiary AAPT, and a cashed-up SP Telemedia. More>>

Most of the time, the 53-year-old Williams manages to keep her composure when in public. Only occasionally does her voice seem on the verge of cracking, like when she's on the phone with Countrywide, the home loan company that holds Williams' future in its hands. One afternoon last week, Williams made her way to the East Side Organizing Project, a free housing counseling agency, still in her janitor's uniform, for yet another conference call with Countrywide.

"It's like nobody is listening," Williams tells the representative she's never met. More>>
