Lyris Technologies found a unique path to expansion: the Berkeley software maker merged with a struggling shell company, J.L. Halsey Corp., seeing huge advantages for growth.For Lyris, the past two years have brought a transformation, with three acquisitions and employee count growing from about 35 to Halsey's current 175, with some 70 in Emeryville, now Lyris' headquarters.
For Halsey shareholders, the story has been more dramatic. Halsey was the successor of NovaCare Inc., a health services provider that sold its operations - and name - as it sank into debt in the late 1990s, after Medicare cuts hit its bottom line.
Halsey stock fell to 3 cents a share in 2002 and was at 30 cents when Halsey announced plans to buy Lyris for $30.7 million in 2005. More>>

In some cases, the proposed property-tax levies result from the consolidation of school districts. ) Gathering of Eagles
When Eagle Scouts from around the Hudson Valley Boy Scout Council gathered at West Point last week, they ranged in age from 16-year-old Adam Goldfrank Cariot of Cornwall to Ed Sambells of New Windsor, who is 91.Sambells won his Eagle award, denoting the Boy Scouts' highest rank, in 1933 and has been involved in Scouting ever since, right up to helping plan this year's second annual Eagle Scout Reunion and Hall of Fame Induction. Goldfrank Cariot represented all those teens in the council's five-county region who are attaining the rank this year. Between them were about 250 Eagles of all ages.
Last year's reunion, also at the West Point Club, was billed as an opportunity to reconnect, whereas this year's had an added dimension - honoring three Eagles who went on to achieve success in business and their community and maintained a lifelong devotion to Scouting. More>>
