    MANILA (Thomson Financial) - Philippine shares closed sharply higher for the third consecutive session Wednesday, powered by market heavyweights Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co (PLDT) and Ayala Corp, which reached record highs on attractive valuations.

    All sectors were higher, with property developers extending their rally on expectations that the central bank will announce its second interest rate cut this year after its policy-setting meeting Thursday.

    At the close, the composite index was up 92.63 points or 2.5 percent at 3,769.82, off the day's peak of 3,783.45. It was the index's best finish since July 13, when it settled at 3,786.02. On that day the index hit a record 3,820.55.

    The broader all-share index jumped 51.07 points or 2.2 percent to 2,346.38.

    Gainers outnumbered decliners 95 to 34, while 39 stocks were steady. More>>

    A grassroots movement to take back local control of schools is finding supporters across the state.

    �I don�t feel what the Governor has mandated is in the best interest of our school, plain and simple,� said Bruce Hartford. Hartford, Chairman of the Nobleboro School Committee, spoke personally because the committee has not addressed the issue.

    Working with the Maine Coalition to Save Schools, Hartford has taken on a role as the organization�s media contact person for Southern Maine. The group plans a petition drive calling for a referendum to repeal the state mandate to regionalize school units.

    The MSCC was born Sept. 5 in Stonington, after the CSD-13 school committee adopted a resolution in support of a referendum to repeal the new school consolidation law. More>>
